Now that America has elected a new president,
the temptation is great to leave the past
behind. The Bush years are over. Don't we all want to look forward to a
new beginning? Of course we do. Trouble is that the legacy of the Bush
Administration will torment us for a long time to come. At the very least the
Bush administration has set back global progress on peace, hunger, population
and climate change by a decade. At the very worst it has bankrupted the global
economy and orchestrated the death of thousands for their own financial
gain.
If we don't hold our leaders accountable for their actions we invite future leaders to repeat them. The argument that this is all in the past and best forgotten flies in the face of the most basic premise of law and order. As a prosecutor in the Department of Justice pointed out: "Every case I have ever brought before a judge and jury happened in the past." By their own admission the Bush Administration is guilty of war crimes for which we hanged people after WWII. There can be no doubt by now that the events
of September 11, 2001 changed the world. They provided the overriding focus of
US foreign policy and certainly were at the center of the Bush Doctrine.
9/11 was the justification for going to war, trampling human rights, shredding
our constitution and bankrupting our country. Most of the challenges President
Obama faces have their genesis in 9/11. Yet we
still do not know exactly who financed and aided the attacks and how it was that
they were successfully carried out. |

There are still so many unanswered questions about that fateful day. By applying the principle of Ockham's razor to these questions it becomes clear that the official version is implausible at best and deserves to be re-investigated. An independent investigation should begin with the events of 9/11 and be allowed to follow the leads that develop to re-establish the rule of law. - Why did the Bush administration lie about
their prior warnings?

The list of questions is too long to list here but each deserves an answer. Although there was a 9/11 commission during the Bush term, the frightened mood of the country and the stonewalling of the Whitehouse prevented it from digging deep enough to uncover the truth.
As a result these unanswered questions linger like a thorn in our shoe, or a smudge on our glasses. They will continue to cloud our vision, tarnish our global reputation and hinder our progress in international diplomacy. Leaving these questions unanswered amounts to a De facto complicity or at the very least a general acceptance that the lives lost on that day simply amounted to "collateral damage" in a global "business deal".
Those who choose not to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. President Obama is correct to end the war in Iraq and to re-focus efforts on capturing Osama Bin Laden. But to re-establish America's credibility on the world stage we need to go further than that. We need to re-open the investigation into the events of 9/11 and determine once and for all who was involved in the planning, financing and execution of this colossal tragedy.
