Winter Solstice 2009

The events of 2009 have taught me the complexities of governing a modern civilization. The race between human understanding and technological advancement is being won by technology. There is far more information available to be manipulated, absorbed, understood and shared than any human can possibly process. The result is an increased separation of knowledge into isolated pockets and a specialization not only in skills and understanding but also in attitudes and values.

Is it any wonder that many of us cling to the notion that an almighty God is in control and will sort it all out in the end? Is it any wonder that we celebrate the arrival of a "Saviour" in the Christian tradition?

For me this is truly a time to celebrate the light within and to have it shine especially bright to balance the long nights and short and cloudy days that nature provides for us this time of year. I am with the birds and the flowers on this one, and as the days start getting longer again, I rejoice in the wonder of these natural cycles and the magnificence of the design that has made it all possible. From gravity forming matter by compressing hydrogen, to the tilting of the earth's axis to create the seasons, I am fascinated by it all.

Placing the Jesus story, as depicted in the bible, central to this celebration is increasingly nonsensical to me. The premise that humanity was once perfect, that we were banished from the garden of Eden for eating of the fruit of knowledge, that we are now all born in sin and should therefore celebrate the birth of our saviour, is blasphemous to my notion that we are evolving constantly and have not yet reached our full potential as humans.

The function of Christ for me is to empower and call me to be more deeply human. It is in this context that I would like to share a little clip where Bishop Spong has presented this alternative view most eloquently http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF6I5VSZVqc and if it speaks to you I would encourage you to visit my site http://www.fortheloveoflife.net/ideas/spong.htm and explore this perspective further.

Wishing you and yours a joyful and glorious celebration of light.

Merry Christmas

Thomas
